Prayer for His Mighty Power: Psalm 93-Supplication Through the Scriptures

Prayer for His Mighty Power

Psalm 93

The main idea therefore, in the psalm is, that, in view of the fact that God reigns, and that nothing can frustrate his plans, or disturb his throne, we should approach him with reverence, with humble trust, with sincere and pure hearts.
Barnes

The Psalms are filled with glorious truths about the Lord. The book of Psalms is not merely a songbook for God’s people, but it is a book filled with theology. Theology is simply the study of God. The Psalms teach us so many foundational truths about the Lord, and this knowledge of the character and nature of God builds our confident trust in the Lord. Despite what the world might say, or what we may be feeling, or how are circumstances appear, we can know solid truth to bolster our faith throughout our days here on earth. Two truths from Psalm 93 that should put our minds and hearts at ease regardless of circumstances are the sovereignty of God and the omnipotence of God.

The sovereignty of God means the Lord has the right and the power to do all that He decides to do (Piper). Psalm 93 begins with an affirmation of the Lord’s sovereignty. The psalmist says, “The Lord reigns!” The Lord is King. He is ruling and reigning. There is nothing that can thwart His purposes (Job 42:2). His counsel stands forever (Psalm 33:11). His dominion is everlasting, and “he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, ‘What have you done?’” (Daniel‬ ‭4:35‬). He hasn’t abdicated His throne in our adversities. He has reigned from eternity past and will continue to reign forever. He rules over all the ups and downs, twists and turns, highs and lows, successes and defeats, joys and sorrows that we face. “When you go through a trial, the sovereignty of God is the pillow upon which you lay your head” (Spurgeon). God will perform all His good pleasures in and for us, and He is orchestrating the details of our lives.

The other truth that gives us courage is the omnipotence of God. Omnipotence means that God is all-powerful. He has unlimited power. Psalm 93 uses the picture of roaring floods, thundering waters, and waves of the sea and he says, “Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty!” (93:4). There are times we must remind ourselves that our God is mightier than whatever stands before us. We can cry with the psalmist, “Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me” (Psalm 69:15). Our troubles, our personal flood or pit, is not mightier than our King. “Is anything too difficult for the Lord?” (Genesis 18:14). There is nothing that lies outside the scope of God’s power to change. He uses His powerful hand and outstretched arm to perform wonders for His people. That has been His record with His people for ages past and will continue to be until He establishes a new heavens and a new earth. He will continue to be faithful to us and display His great power, incredible might, and depths of wisdom on our behalf and for our concerns.

Let’s come to Him, our mighty, ruling King, and beseech Him to work His transforming, overcoming power in the situations weighing on our hearts and minds.

The Lord reigns

93:1-2 The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed; he has put on strength as his belt. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.
Let’s pray:
▫️Lord, You are reigning over the entire world, upholding it merely by Your powerful word (Hebrews 1:3). I know You are ruling over the details of ________ that is before me right now. Help me to trust You and rest in Your wise orchestrating of this circumstance in my life.
▫️Nothing can thwart Your plans for my life. You have brought to my life all that I am currently facing and You are using it to shape me into the image of Christ. Give me the grace to yield myself to Your Spirit and Your will.
▫️Father, You are girded with strength, and You desire for me to be strong in You and in the power of Your might. Give me the spiritual eyes to see that in this situation, I am not wrestling against flesh and blood but this is a spiritual battle. Strengthen me to fight this battle clothed in Your armor and battling with Your weapon (Ephesians 6:10-17).
▫️All power is in Your hand and I rejoice to have it so (Spurgeon).

He is mightier

93:3-5 The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring. Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty! Your decrees are very trustworthy; holiness befits your house, O Lord, forevermore.
Let’s pray:
▫️Lord, You are mighty, and You are mightier than ____ which I am experiencing now. Give me hope that You are even now working in ways that I cannot see, and You will withhold no good thing from them that walk uprightly (Psalm 84:11).
▫️You have set boundaries for the sea, and the waves fall and rise at Your command, so too, You have set boundaries on my life and my affliction and You command all things for my good and Your glory. You will bring forth beauty from these ashes.
▫️Lord, the surpassing greatness of Your power would be at work in my life right now. Your resurrection power would give new life to ________, which has been heavy on my heart.
▫️Your decrees, Lord, are very trustworthy. Transform my mind with Your trustworthy Word as I renew my mind with Your truth. Help me to take every thought captive today concerning ________ so that I would not be anxious, but rather, I would rejoice in Your strength to redeem.
▫️I would look to You to supply all my needs, especially the strength I need to endure this hardship with joy and perseverance. May I truly experience today Your sufficient grace and Your power made perfect in my weakness. May the power of Christ dwell in me, that I would be well content in these distresses and difficulties, “for when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).

May the Lord do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, for His glory and our good. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
