No Good Thing Will He Withhold: Psalm 84-Supplication through the Scriptures
No Good Thing Will He WithholdPsalm 84
Heavenly pilgrims are not left uncomforted or unprotected.Charles Spurgeon
There have been many times when I have comforted my own anxious heart with the promise of Psalm 84:11, “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.” No good thing does He withhold.
Many years ago, I read the autobiography of George Muller. He recounts when his wife was very ill to the point of death, he read Psalm 84:11 to his wife and himself. “To my own heart the verse was a great support, for I said to myself again and again, ‘I walk uprightly, and therefore my Father will withhold nothing from me, that is good for me; if therefore the restoration of my dearest wife is good for me, it will be surely given; if otherwise, I have to seek to glorify God by most perfect submission to His holy will’ (wholesomewords.org). His example of trust in the Lord to never withhold that which would be for his good, and his submission to the wise will of his Heavenly Father has helped me many times over the years to counsel my own soul. If it is good for me, my God will give it. To say it another way, if God has not given the provision, the change in circumstance, the prayed for longing, then even in the withholding we trust that He is working for our good.
Psalm 119:68 says of the Lord, “You are good and do good.” We know this good Father of ours, who does what is good, works all things for our good when we love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). But we must walk by faith. Paul says in Galatians that the life we now live in the flesh, we live by faith in the Son of God (Galatians 2:20). Living by faith is actively trusting who God is and what He has promised. It means, that despite what we can see and perceive, despite how we feel, we reorient ourselves to the truth He has revealed in His Word. He withholds no good thing from His own. He supplies our needs (Philippians 4:19). He knows what we need before we even ask (Matthew 6:8). Our Father concerns Himself even with the sparrows, and we are more valuable to Him than many sparrows (Matthew 10:39-31). He sees the tears we cry, the anxiety that fills our minds, the situation we think desperately needs to change, and He wants us to trust Him, the Lord of hosts, who is our King, our sun, and our shield. Psalm 84 ends, “O LORD of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!” Will we trust Him today? Will we be confidently assured that our God will withhold no good thing from those that walk uprightly?
Let’s pray through Psalm 84 turning in trust to Him to provide us with every thing He knows is good and necessary for us.
Longing for His Presence
84:1-2 “How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God.
Let’s pray:
▫️We would long for the Lord, our living God, and be satisfied in Him alone regardless of our circumstances and pressing needs.
▫️When we’re faced with needs that feel pressing, our heart and our flesh would sing for joy as we rest in the shadow of His wings (Psalm 63:7).
▫️Though our heart and flesh may fail, He would be the strength of our hearts and our portion forever (Psalm 73:26).
Blessed
84:3-4 Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise! Selah
Let’s pray:
▫️As the sparrow has a home and is cared for by our loving Heavenly Father, we would not be anxious for our needs because we are of more worth to our Father than many sparrows, and He knows what we need (Matthew 10:29-31).
▫️We would experience the blessed happiness and quietness of soul as we worship the Lord of hosts, our King and our God, ever singing His praises.
Strength in You
84:5-7 Blessed are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion. As they go through the Valley of Baca they make it a place of springs; the early rain also covers it with pools. They go from strength to strength; each one appears before God in Zion.
Let’s pray:
▫️We would be blessed as we look to the Lord for sustaining strength while we wait for Him to supply all our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).
▫️Though we may pass through the valley of tears, it would become to us a place of springs: the very circumstances and needs that cause us to cry to Him would be His instrument of blessing and the display of His love, power, and care.
▫️As joyful pilgrims, we would find refreshments even in the dreariest parts of the road.*
▫️The Lord would give the supplies we need while we traverse the road He points out for us.*
▫️We would go from strength to strength. The testing of our faith would produce perseverance, perseverance character, and character hope (Romans 5:3-4).
Hear My Prayer
84:8-9 O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob! Selah Behold our shield, O God; look on the face of your anointed!
Let’s pray:
▫️The Lord of hosts, with numerous ministering spirits at His disposal, would hear our prayer and act to supply all our needs.
▫️The Lord would be our shield protecting us from the dangers of our situation that we have no control over.
▫️He would turn His face toward us and bless us with His presence and His provision for all our needs.
No Good Thing Withheld
84:10-12 For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!”
Let’s pray:
▫️When fear or unbelief tempt us to distrust, we would be reminded that this light, momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison (2 Corinthians 4:17).
▫️We would trust Him that we are not left uncomforted or unprotected on this pilgrimage.*
▫️The Lord would be our sun and shield. A sun for happy days and a shield for dangerous ones.*
▫️He would give grace and glory in abundant measure to meet every thing we will face today.
▫️We would confidently rest assured that He will withhold no good thing, not even one.
May the Lord do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, for His glory and our good. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
