Supplication Through the Scriptures—Psalm 1
Psalm 1
My purpose in these posts is not to exegete the given text, but to supply myself and others with requests that can be prayed for ourselves and for our loved ones, whether that be a spouse, child, parent, or friend. Sometimes it can be a challenge to know what to pray, but when we read the Scripture we see the truth and an ample amount of beneficial things to pray. I hope these posts will help you to unite the Scripture and prayer, ignite your prayer life, and guide you when you’re feeling weary or in need of a prompt.
Lord, teach us to pray.
Lord, teach us to pray.
1:1-2 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.
Pray:
▪️ they would know the blessedness of walking in the way of the Lord.
▪️ they would not walk in the way of the wicked. Is there some concern you have for your loved one? A sinful tendency you see?
▪️ the Lord would incline their heart to seek godly counsel and advice, and they would reject ungodly counsel. What does your loved one need God’s wisdom concerning?
▪️they would not keep company with scoffers who boast in themselves, scorn others, and show contempt for You. Give them eyes to see their folly and to turn away from the path of the wicked. Pray about the ungodly influences in your loved one’s life.
▪️that their heart would be inclined to God’s Word.
▪️they would so delight in His Word that they would think on it and ponder it day and night. The Word would be so established in their heart that when they mutter quietly to themselves throughout the day, they would be whispering to themselves the faithfulness of God’s character and the truth of His promises.
1:3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
Pray:
▪️ as they delight themselves in God’s Word, they would be firmly planted in Him, and as they abide in Him, they would bear much fruit for His glory.
▪️ that whatever they do would prosper because the Lord is with them. Pray about an area that your loved one needs the Lord’s presence and help to prosper.
1:4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
Pray:
▪️ they would not be counted among the worthless wicked, like the chaff that the wind drives away. Pray for their salvation, if they are not saved. Praise God for their salvation and His promise to complete the work He began in them, if they are saved.
1:5-6 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.Pray:
▪️ they would be among God’s chosen people and would make gathering with His congregation a priority.
▪️ they and their ways would be known to the Lord.
▪️ they would walk the path of righteousness and not wickedness. Pray about a character quality that would help them grow in godliness.
May the Lord do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask or think, for His glory and our good, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
