The Sound of Weeping-Psalm 6
The Sound of Weeping
Psalm 6
“Lament is the honest cry of a hurting heart wrestling with the paradox of pain and the promise of God’s goodness.”Mark Vroegop, Dark Clouds Deep Mercy
Today, I am praying for those who are grieving. These last couple of years have been difficult for many people for various reasons. Grief can be caused by different kinds of loss. But recently I have seen several people endure the heartbreaking loss of their loved one: a beloved husband, father, mother, or friend. Consider praying through Psalm 6 for your own grief or for someone who is grieving. God is the Father of mercy and the God of all comfort (2 Cor. 1:3). Let’s pray that He will comfort the grieving in all their affliction and give them abundant comfort in Christ.
The Languishing
6:1-3 “O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath. Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing; heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled. My soul also is greatly troubled. But you, O Lord—how long?
Let’s pray:
▫️When those who are grieving feel weak and faint and are languishing, the Lord would be gracious to them and His grace would be sufficient for them today.
▫️What troubles are they facing because of their loss? Physical troubles, including: finances, difficulty getting out of bed to face the day, parenting alone, or something else? What soul troubles are they facing? Depression, anxiety, fear, questioning their faith and trust in the Lord? Let’s pray the Lord abundantly meets these needs.
▫️The Lord would come to their aid quickly, and they would take their sorrows directly to Him.
▫️This affliction would produce in them the peaceful fruit of righteousness, and the testing of their faith would produce endurance.
▫️The Lord Himself would bear their griefs and carry their sorrows.
Strengthen and Deliver
6:4-5 Turn, O Lord, deliver my life; save me for the sake of your steadfast love. For in death there is no remembrance of you; in Sheol who will give you praise?
Let’s pray:
▫️The Lord would turn toward them and strengthen, fortify, and equip them in their dark valley.
▫️In His steadfast love, He would deliver them from their tribulation and trouble, and He would meet their needs.
▫️The Lord would continually guide them, and satisfy their desire in scorched places, giving strength to their bones, and they would be like a spring of water whose waters do not fail, because they are leaning into Him in this dark time.
Weary and Weeping
6:6-7 I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears; I drench my couch with my weeping. My eye wastes away because of grief; it grows weak because of all my foes.
Let’s pray:
▫️The Lord would be their strength when they are weary and feel they cannot continue in the face of their adversity.
▫️The Lord would hear their sighs of despair and their weeping in their distress.
▫️Their weeping would lead to healing, and they would not lose heart.
▫️Those around them would weep with them, support them, sit with them, uphold them, take their hand and help them walk through this “valley of the shadow of death.”
▫️They would know when to seek help, if needed.
The Lord Has Heard
6:8-10 Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping. The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord accepts my prayer. All my enemies shall be ashamed and greatly troubled; they shall turn back and be put to shame in a moment.”
Let’s pray:
▫️The Father of mercies and the God of all comfort would hear the sound of their weeping in their deep mourning over their bitter circumstances.
▫️They would have courage to offer up bold requests to God Almighty.
Let’s praise the Lord that:
▫️He sees their affliction, hears their cries, knows their oppression.
▫️He is working all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purposes.
▫️He withholds no good thing from His children.
May the Lord do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask or think, for His glory and our good. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
