Supplication through the Scripture-Psalm 2

The Sovereign King Rules

Take a moment to praise the Lord this morning that He is the sovereign King and His purposes are always accomplished.

Read through Psalm 2 and pray for yourself or a loved one.

2:1-3 “Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, "Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us."

Pray:

▪️ that they would not set themselves in opposition against the Lord.

▪️ they would submit themselves to the Lord’s rule and reign.

▪️ their eyes would be open to the vanity of fighting against God.

▪️ they would not seek to cast off the Lord’s rule of their lives, but would cast themselves and their burdens on Him knowing He will sustain and care for them. Do you see an area they are fighting against the Lord and not submitting to His ways? What burden do they need to cast on Him?

“To a graceless neck the yoke of Christ is intolerable, but to the saved sinner it is easy and light.” — The Treasury of David: Charles Spurgeon Commentary on Psalms

2:4-6 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, "As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill."

Pray:

▪️ they would trust in Jesus Christ, their sins would be forgiven, and the wrath of God would not be upon them.

▪️ they would know that the Lord is slow to anger and abundant in steadfast love.

▪️ they would know Christ as King of kings and Lord of lords.

▪️ they would have confidence and rejoicing because God has made Christ the King. He is ruling in His wisdom. What circumstance does your loved one need more trust to look to Christ’s wise providence in their life?

2:7-9 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, "You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel."

Pray:

▪️ they would rejoice in the only Begotten Son of God, and they would know their inheritance and place in the family of God because of Christ.

▪️ they would be counted among His chosen generation, His royal priesthood, His holy nation, and His own special people.

▪️ they would take courage and have peace knowing that Christ is a conquering King and He will set all things right and make all things new in His time.

2:10-12 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.”

Pray

▪️ they would be filled with wisdom from above that is pure, peaceable, and gentle. What area does your loved one need to act wisely?

▪️ they would heed the warnings of Scripture and watch over their souls, and when necessary, submit themselves to the Lord’s discipline, knowing it is producing holiness.

▪️ they would work and serve the Lord heartily with reverence and awe. Is there diligence needed for a project or commitment?

▪️ they would rejoice in the Lord the Sovereign King, and feel and show great joy and delight in Him.

▪️ they would worship the Son, Jesus Christ, in spirit and in truth.

▪️ they would take refuge in the Lord and in the shadow of His wings. Pray for a loved one’s concern and pray they find refuge in God while walking through their trial.

May the Lord do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask or think, for His glory and our good. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
