Prayer and Praise for Deliverance: Psalm 107-Supplication through the Scripture

Prayer and Praise for Deliverance

Psalm  107

The Lord's deliverances are of the most complete and triumphant kind, he neither leaves the soul in darkness nor in bonds, nor does he permit the powers of evil again to enthrall the liberated captive. What he does is done for ever.
Charles Spurgeon

Psalm 107 begins the fifth and final book of the Psalms. It is a psalm filled with hope. Two verses are repeated throughout the psalm. “Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress” (107:6,13,28), followed by, “Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!” (107:8,21,31). Through various trouble,  distress, fainting, longing, darkness, shadow of death, affliction, destruction, and storms, the people of God know on Whom they should call, and their God delivers. And “the Lord delights to come in when no one else can be of the slightest avail” (Spurgeon).

The psalmist calls on whoever is wise to consider diligently the steadfast love of the Lord (107:43). In this Psalm the love of the Lord is seen in His deliverance from varied afflictions, spiritual, mental, and physical. Fainting souls are satisfied and filled (107:5,9). Those sitting in darkness and the shadow of death are brought out and released from their bondage (107:10,14). Some, because of their own foolishness suffer affliction, yet they are healed and delivered from their destruction (107:17,20). Others meet disaster in their occupation, yet the Lord brings them to their desired haven (107:23,30). He repeatedly shows Himself to be One who “sets the needy securely on  high away from affliction” (107:41 NASB).

Countless situations face us in which we have no power to bring about a desired end. But, “what we can do and what God can do are two very different things” (Spurgeon). Our God hears our cries of desperation and delivers us. Let’s pray through Psalm 107 for those areas of life where we need Him to redeem us from trouble, and let’s give thanks to Him for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever.

He has redeemed from trouble

107:1-3 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.
Let’s pray:
▫️We thank You, Lord, for You are good and You do good (Psalm 119:68). Your steadfast love endures forever. Thank You for the good You have done for us in ______.
▫️Thank You for redeeming us from the dominion of darkness and transferring us to Your own kingdom. Thank You for making us Your sons and daughters. Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us that we should be called the children of God! (1 John 3:1).
▫️We ask You now to redeem us from our trouble and from the adversary. We feel pain and distress concerning _______, we pray You would draw near to us in Your lovingkindness and Your deliverance would be complete and triumphant.

Delivered from fainting

107:4-9 Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.
Let’s pray:
▫️Our souls are fainting within us because of ______. We are crying to You in our trouble and in the loneliness and isolation we feel. Meet us here in this desert.
▫️Lead us by Your straight way, according to Your word. You know the way in which we should go concerning this hardship. Guide our footsteps into the path of peace. Because You are leading, we can be sure that we are on the right path.
▫️Lord, satisfy our longing souls. None can satisfy but You alone. You have said if anyone is thirsty he should come to You and drink. Fill us with Your Spirit that rivers of living water might flow from our innermost being (John 7:37-38).
▫️Fill our hungry souls with good things. You know exactly what we need for this day in order to glorify You in the midst of this trouble. Work Your wonders in this situation and in our lives.
▫️Thank you, Lord, for the hope we have in You when we are downtrodden because of our difficulties.

Delivered from darkness and the shadow of death

107:10-16 Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons, for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High. So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron.
Let’s pray:
▫️ Those sitting in darkness would see Your great light. Those sitting in the shadow of death, Your light would dawn upon them (Matthew 4:16).
▫️If there is hardship because of our own rebellion, we would repent, humble ourselves, and no longer spurn Your words or Your counsel. Thank You that You give greater grace and You give grace to the humble (James 4:6).
▫️You would bring us out of darkness and the shadow of death that we are experiencing because of ______. Bring us up out of this pit of destruction and miry clay and set our feet on a rock making our footsteps firm (Psalm 40:2).
▫️You break the chains that bind us. Deliver us from the things that feel like bondage, the things we feel powerless to change within ourselves, the things externally we feel trapped by, and all things that are weighing on our hearts. Put forth Your wisdom, power, and love to perform marvels on our behalf as we seek You (Spurgeon).

Delivered from destruction

107:17-22 Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction; they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!
Let’s pray:
▫️We pray best when we are fallen on our faces in painful helplessness (Spurgeon). We feel that now, Lord, and so we seek You and cry out to You in our helplessness.
▫️Lord, You would send forth Your Word and heal us. In our inner man and in the circumstances of our lives, we need the power of Your Word at work to bring healing, peace, restoration, and reconciliation.
▫️We have acted foolishly at times. But You promise to give wisdom to those who ask (James 1:5). Help us to fear You and not despise wisdom and instruction so that we can gain true wisdom. Give us Your wisdom for our suffering and affliction and deliver us.
▫️Remove the grumbling and complaining that we are so prone to do, and instead fill our mouths with thanksgiving and songs of joy about Your wonderful deeds.

Delivered from distress in our daily business

107:23-32 Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters; they saw the deeds of the Lord, his wondrous works in the deep. For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
Let’s pray:
▫️As we go about our daily routines, we face many ups and downs. Direct our hearts into the love of God and the steadfastness of Christ (2 Thessalonians 3:5), so that we can see all things are given to us by Your loving hand and we can persevere because You are our strength.
▫️When we feel our courage has melted away, help us and strengthen us to not lose heart in doing good for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary (Galatians 6:9). We are tempted to grow weary with ______. Help us to be resolute in this area.
▫️Our daily work can be stormy. You have the power to make the storm be still and hush the waves of the sea. Make us a glad by quieting our hearts and minds with Your peace in the midst of chaotic days.

Delivered out of affliction

107:33-43 He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants. He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in; they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield. By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish. When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow, he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes; but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks. The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth. Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.
Let’s pray:
▫️You are a God who turns rivers into deserts, and deserts into pools of water. We ask that You would turn around the situation that we face today.
▫️By Your blessing all our troubles are meant for good. We ask for Your deliverance from ______, and we ask that You would cause us to bear much fruit from this time.
▫️You raise the needy out of affliction. You see all the afflictions that are causing us misery and discomfort. Raise us up and help us to flee to You, our strong tower (Proverbs 18:10).
▫️We cry out to You to answer us in our day of trouble. We are afflicted and in pain. Let Your salvation, O God, set us securely on high away from our affliction (Psalm 69:29).

May the Lord do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, for His glory and our good. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
