Psalm 18, pt.3-Supplication through the Scriptures

Psalm 18

Praying for Our Spouse and Our Marriage, part 3

Marriage is not mainly about being or staying in love. It’s mainly about telling the truth with our lives. It’s about portraying something true about Jesus Christ and the way he relates to his people. It is about showing in real life the glory of the gospel.
John Piper, This Momentary Marriage

The Lord Equips Us

18:37-42 “I pursued my enemies and overtook them, and did not turn back till they were consumed. I thrust them through, so that they were not able to rise; they fell under my feet. For you equipped me with strength for the battle; you made those who rise against me sink under me. You made my enemies turn their backs to me, and those who hated me I destroyed. They cried for help, but there was none to save; they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them. I beat them fine as dust before the wind; I cast them out like the mire of the streets.

Let’s pray:

▫️We and our spouses would be persistent and persevere in fighting for our marriage and against those things in ourselves that would cause strife.

▫️Individually we would be putting to death the deeds of the body and be led by the Spirit of God (Romans 8:13-14).

▫️The Lord by His Spirit would enable us and our spouses to reckon ourselves dead to sin, and we would no longer be slaves of sin so that sin would have no power over us.

▫️The Lord would equip us with the fruit of the Spirit for the battles that we face against our marriages.

▫️His steadfastness would gird us to be faithful to lifelong love and commitment in our marriage.

▫️If there are any who would seek to do harm to us or our marriage, the Lord would intervene on our behalf.

The Lord Gives Deliverance

18:43-45 You delivered me from strife with the people; you made me the head of the nations; people whom I had not known served me. As soon as they heard of me they obeyed me; foreigners came cringing to me. Foreigners lost heart and came trembling out of their fortresses.

Let’s pray:

▫️There would be no strife or contention in our marriages.

▫️When there are disagreements and disputes, we would honor the Lord in discussing and resolving the issues.

▫️Through love, we and our spouses would serve one another.

▫️The Lord would bless the work of our hands.

▫️If God has placed us or our spouses in a position of leadership, we would be faithful stewards and those under our authority would be blessed by how we lead, both in our homes and in our occupations.

Our God Lives

18:46-50 The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God of my salvation— the God who gave me vengeance and subdued peoples under me, who rescued me from my enemies; yes, you exalted me above those who rose against me; you delivered me from the man of violence. For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations, and sing to your name. Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever.”

Let’s pray:

▫️While we live, we would live to the Lord and we would have such hopefulness that because He lives we can face the difficulties of this life together.

▫️The Lord would rescue and protect us from the evil one.

▫️The Lord would bring blessing and favor to our spouses and our marriages.

▫️If anyone is in an abusive marriage, the Lord would protect and hear the cries of the afflicted, send help, and heal and restore.

▫️We and our spouses would walk hand in hand through this life, praising the Lord together.

▫️Our steadfast love for one another would reflect the Lord’s steadfast love to us.

▫️May our children be blessed and benefit from our commitment to one another and to Christ.

May the Lord do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask or think, for His glory and our good. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
