Psalm 19-Supplication through the Scriptures
Psalm 19
Praying for Our Children
This morning we pray for our children. As a mother, the words of 3 John 4 resonate with me, “I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.” Psalm 19 describes the great sufficiency of the Word of God. I pray the Lord grants our children a deep and abiding love for Him because they have come to know Him through His Word and have seen His glory on display in creation.
Creation Declares God’s Glory
19:1-6 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
Let’s pray:
▫️Our children would observe the world that God has created, and they would see His magnificence and glory and be in awe of His greatness.
▫️When they consider the vastness of space, they would recognize the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God. They would gain a greater understanding that His judgments are unsearchable and His ways unfathomable (Romans 11:33).
▫️Our children would seek God for His wisdom when they lack it, and He would give it abundantly (James 1:5).
▫️The creation would cause them to be in awe of His great power, and they would lean on His power to work on their behalf.
▫️They would rest in the Lord’s unchangeable character as the Father of Lights with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow (James 1:17).
▫️In the beauty, light, and heat of the sun, they would gain a glimpse of the greatness of our God, whose radiance is like the sunlight (Habakkuk 3:4).
God’s Word: Perfect, Sure, Right, and True.
19:7-11 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
Let’s pray:
▫️Our children would have a fervency for the Word of God and take pleasure in it.
▫️The Word of God would turn our children’s hearts to the Lord, and it would refresh the hearts of those who are weary.
▫️Our children would know the sure, firm foundation of the Word of God, they would depend on it for wisdom, and the Lord would delight to make them wise.
▫️They would be humble and teachable so that they may gain wisdom.
▫️They would find God’s Word to be a straight edge by which they can evaluate all of life, and the reliability of His Word would make their hearts glad and rejoice.
▫️The purity of God’s Word would show the radiance of who He is, and the Word would be a lamp to their feet, a light to their path, and cause their eyes to see clearly to evaluate the things they will encounter in this life.
▫️There would be a genuine fear of God in their lives which would guide them to know Him deeply and to walk with Him faithfully.
▫️The Word of God would be more satisfying to them than any material thing and it would be sweeter to them than honey.
▫️The Word would reveal to them where they are not following the Lord’s ways, and our children would pay close attention to keeping His ways and be rewarded.
The Servant of God
19:12-14 Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
Let’s pray:
▫️As a servant of the Lord, they would eagerly and willingly submit themselves to His guidance and His Word.
▫️The Lord would graciously and gently show them their sinful ways, lead them to repentance, and supply them with strength to wage war against their fleshly desires.
▫️The secret and hidden struggles would be confessed by our children and they would find hope and healing.
▫️The Lord would watch over the ways of our children and keep them from wandering away from Him and keep them from pride and arrogance in pursuing their own ways.
▫️The Lord would complete the work He started in them, and through the trials of this life, He would make them perfect and complete, lacking in nothing (Philippians 1:6; James 1:2-4).
▫️The words of their mouth and the meditations of their heart would be pleasing to the Lord.
▫️The Lord would help them to see activities in their lives that do not encourage holiness, and they would remove those things from their lives.
▫️They would look to the Lord as their rock, the One who gives them stability and the One they can depend on no matter what challenges they face in life.
▫️The Lord would be the Redeemer of their lives. They would put their faith and trust in Christ alone.
May the Lord do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask or think, for His glory and our good. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Oh the glory yet to be revealed! It is enough to make a man faint for joy at the prospect of it. Our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. Then shall we know the value of the Scriptures when we swim in that sea of unutterable delight to which their streams will bear us, if we commit ourselves to them.
