Psalm 24-The King of Glory. Supplication through the Scriptures
Psalm 24
The King of Glory
Psalm 24 is a psalm of adoration. It rehearses the greatness of the King we serve and reminds us of the required response of His people: holiness. Our obedience is an act of worship in gratitude to the King of Glory who has done so much for us. The Lord is described by several names and several deeds in this psalm. May we take time to pause and consider Him who is the Lord, who founded and established the world, who dwells in His holy place, the God of our salvation, the God of Jacob, the King of Glory, the Lord strong and mighty and mighty in battle, and the Lord of hosts. This is our great God.
The Creator God: The Great King
24:1-2 The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.
Lord, I praise You:
▫️For You have created all things. All things belong to You, including me. I praise You that though the entire world is Yours, You have chosen me as Your child and have set Your love on me.
I pray:
▫️That I would receive with gratitude everything that You have provided for me, knowing that everything created by You is good (1 Timothy 4:4).
▫️I would live all of my life for You since You are the giver of my life and breath.
▫️I would live with a clear conscience before You in the freedoms You have given me in Christ.
The Holy God
24:3-6 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation. Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah
Lord, I pray:
▫️You would bless me and choose to bring me near to You and be satisfied with Your goodness (Psalm 65:4).
▫️You would create in my a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit within me (Psalm 51:10).
▫️I would reflect Your holiness by walking blamelessly, in purity, fleeing from idolatry, being truthful and putting falsehood and deceit far from me. I would have a singleness of heart and devotion to You. What sin am I struggling with?
▫️I would have a holy fear of You and You would bless me (Psalm 115:13).
▫️I would know You and seek after You, knowing that You are a rewarder of those who diligently seek after You (Hebrews 11:6).
▫️I would seek to behold the beauty of the Lord (Psalm 27:4).
The Glorious King
24:7-10 Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle! Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory! Selah
Lord, I pray:
▫️In awe, reverence, and gratitude to You, I would bring glory to You in all that I do. There would be nothing done for selfish ambition but only for You, the King of glory.
▫️You are strong and mighty! May I fix my hope firmly on Your power and Your strength. When my situation feels overwhelming, or I feel unable to do what You have called me to do, may I look to You and rest in Your strength.
▫️When I am wrestling with principalities and powers and spiritual hosts of wickedness and am engaged in a spiritual battle, I would be strong in You and in the power of Your might (Ephesians 6:10-12). You would fight for me as the Divine Warrior.
▫️The angel of the Lord would encamp around me and rescue me (Psalm 34:7).
▫️This day I would remember that You are the Lord of the hosts, the God of the armies of heaven.
May the Lord do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, for His glory and our good. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
We know the might of Jesus by the battles which he has fought, the victories which he has won over sin, and death, and hell, and we clap our hands as we see him leading captivity captive in the majesty of his strength. Oh for a heart to sing his praises! Mighty hero, be thou crowned for ever King of kings and Lord of lords.
