Psalm 20-Supplication through the Scriptures
Psalm 20
The Day of Trouble
We may have our own will, when our will is God's will.
C.H.Spurgeon
The day of trouble. It’s not really the day anyone anticipates or can fully prepare for. I don’t know anyone who looks forward to those days that bring heartache or turmoil. But everyone faces some of those days, or many. Perhaps your “day of trouble” has come and gone, leaving a wake of trouble. Perhaps your day is looming on the horizon. For the Christian, the day of trouble does not have to be a day of defeat or fear. But we must recall to our minds the truth of our God and His character. He is faithful and will not be absent in our time of need.
He Supports in the Day of Trouble
20:1-3 May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you! May he send you help from the sanctuary and give you support from Zion! May he remember all your offerings and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices! Selah
Lord, I pray:
▫️You would answer my cries for help with encouragement and support from Your Word. Answer my cries for help by working on my behalf in this day of trouble. What trouble am I facing today?
▫️Your name, Lord, would be a strong tower, a place of protection and security, that I may flee to in my day of trouble (Proverbs 18:10).
▫️Put me in a place of safety until these troubles pass by.
▫️You would providentially send me help, and You Yourself would be my ever-present help in my time of need and I would not be afraid (Psalm 46:1-2).
▫️You would support me in my weakness, sustain me in this trial, and refresh me when I am weary. When I am weak, please be my strength.
▫️Let me find favor in Your sight and do not hide Your face from me.
Joy During the Day of Trouble
20:4-5 May he grant you your heart's desire and fulfill all your plans! May we shout for joy over your salvation, and in the name of our God set up our banners! May the Lord fulfill all your petitions!
Lord, I pray:
▫️All my unfulfilled plans, hopes, and desires would be released into Your wise and sovereign hands.
▫️My true desire would be to see You magnified, Your plans fulfilled, Your purposes accomplished.
▫️I would rest knowing all Your promises are true and faithful. What promise do I need to cling to today?
▫️Whatever Your will purposes for my life, may I anticipate with joy the glorifying of Your name, the strengthening of my faith, and the providential care with which You will support me.
▫️My confidence in You would be clearly evident, not confidence in a particular outcome, but confidence in You. Am I placing too much hope in a desired outcome?
Trusting in the Day of Trouble
20:6-9 Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed; he will answer him from his holy heaven with the saving might of his right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright. O Lord, save the king! May he answer us when we call.
Lord, I pray:
▫️I would remember that I serve a covenant keeping God. You will not fail me.
▫️I would draw near to You with confidence knowing that in Christ my cries are heard and You will answer.
▫️I would remember the incredible power of my God and the mighty deeds You perform for Your children. How has God worked for me in the past that can encourage me to continue to look to Him and trust in Him?
▫️In this day of trouble, my hope, confidence, trust, peace, and joy would be found in Christ alone.
May the Lord do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask or think, for His glory and our good. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Since Jesus was heard, we shall be; God is in heaven, but our prayers can scale those glorious heights; those heavens are holy, but Jesus purifies our prayers, and so they gain admittance; our need is great, but the divine arm is strong, and all its strength is "saving strength;" that strength, moreover, is in the hand which is most used and which is used most readily—the right hand. What encouragements are these for pleading saints!
